Introduction

In December 1988, two sets of twins were born in Bogotá, the capital city, and in Vélez, Santander, a rural area 500 km away in Colombia. The Bogotá twins were born on December 21st, 1988, and the Vélez twins were born on December 22nd. Due to a medical condition, one of the Santander twins was transferred to Bogotá, and during his hospital treatment, he was accidentally exchanged with one of the Bogotá twins. This incident remained unknown for 26 years, until 2014, when the young men discovered the truth by chance.

The Discovery

In 2014, a co-worker of one of the Bogotá twins, while buying meat in a butcher’s shop in Bogotá, noticed a physical resemblance between the butcher and her friend. After showing a photograph of the butcher to her friend (the Bogotá twin), he was very surprised by the resemblance. Upon further investigation on social media, the Bogotá twin discovered that the butcher also had a twin brother who closely resembled his own fraternal twin. This led to a meeting of the four young men, who decided to undergo DNA testing at our institution, thereby confirming the swap.

Legal Repercussions

The case was brought before the courts in a legal dispute against the Bogotá hospital, and in June 2025, a court ruled in favor of the two pairs of twins, holding the hospital responsible for the swap and ordering financial compensation. The ruling acknowledged the harm caused by their being raised in families that were not their biological ones.

Social and Cultural Impact

This story captured national and international attention. The New York Times published a feature article on the case in 2015, and in 2024, Netflix released the documentary Hermanos por accidente. Furthermore, international scholars examined the case and published the book Accidental Brothers: The Story of Twins Exchanged at Birth and the Power of Nature and Nurture.

Conclusion

The case of these exchanged identical twins allowed for the assessment of the influence of genetics and environment on individual development, highlighting the utility of human identification testing. Moreover, it serves as a reminder of the importance of newborn identification protocols in hospitals, as errors of this nature can have serious repercussions on individuals’ lives.
