In France, solving unresolved criminal cases, particularly cold cases, represents a major challenge for the justice system. Since 2022, the creation of the National Division for Serial or Unsolved Crimes has enabled the reinvestigation of 385 cases in two years, leveraging innovative forensic technologies including forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG). Indeed, the French national database, the FNAEG, only allows for direct matches or kinship up to the first degree. FIGG, on the other hand, extends these searches up to the 5th degree of kinship using targeted panels such as the ForenSeq® Kintelligence kit, thus opening new investigative leads from crime scene DNA. Following an initial validation study of the ForenSeq® Kintelligence kit, which enabled the implementation of a massively parallel sequencing workflow on the MiSeq FGx, the French National Gendarmerie initiated a study in 2025 combining the automation of library preparation and sequencing (using the Prepstation) with library quality control (QIAxcel). This project aims to optimize sample preparation, reduce the risks associated with manual handling, and ensure reliable and reproducible results from low quantities of DNA.
